Meet Sir Sweets: Alfie!

I must encourage you to check out his cute photo below with the hat on. I couldn’t make it fit properly in the graphic, but he is such a sweet boy.

Alfie is approximately 3 years old and he came to WAG from Dixie County via a high kill shelter. He has the absolute softest fur and he loves to give snuggles and kisses. He weighs about 47 pounds and is fully grown. He is learning to walk on a leash and other basic manners. He does not seem to have any reactivity issues. He has the cutest hound like a baying howl. He has just been neutered is healthy and ready to melt your heart. I don’t think we have done any dog introductions with Alfie as of yet.

He is a very sweet gentle boy. If you would like to meet Alfie call WAG at 352-528-9888 or you can email us at info@willistonanimalgroup.com You can also check out his Petfinder page.

If you can’t adopt Alfie there are two other options for you to help him. You could be a foster parent to Alfie, or you could sponsor him. If you would like to learn about either of these options, use the same contact information mentioned above.

Grover The Saddest Reindeer Has Found His Forever Home!

You may remember reading about Grover, who was Rover. He was very shy and scared of humans. He does very well with other dogs, but not people.

One of our volunteers took him home as a foster and they absolutely fell in love with him. This is the best kind of foster failure there is. He is now happy and safe in his forever home.

Happy tails sweet Grover!

I love happy endings, don’t you?

WAG will be at Tractor Supply this Saturday from 10-2 for an adoption event, in Williston, Florida. Come on out and meet us. You might even want to volunteer with WAG.

Putting On The Fritz!

Does he not look dapper and handsome? I think this is the most photogenic dog I have taken pictures of yet. Or, it could be my new expensive phone camera I had to buy when my phone died, yesterday. Either way, this boy is handsome! I will be sharing his brother tomorrow. His name is a little harder, lol.

Fritz is another dog that we rescued from a high kill shelter where he was on the kill list. Fritz is about a year old. He weighs 40 pounds, but he honestly could put on some weight. He is sweet, neutered, and has no current medical issues. He is active, of course, and would do best with an active family and a fenced yard. So far, he loves other dogs and plays well. He is not yet housebroken and is learning to walk nicely on a leash. He has not been uploaded to our Petfinder page, yet, but I don’t think this boy will last long. Check out all of his lovely photos below.

If you would like to meet Fritz you can call WAG at 352-528-9888 or you can email us at info@willistonanimalgroup.com If you can not adopt Fritz you can always sponsor him, so be sure and ask about that if you are interested.

Leo The Lion Has Been Adopted!

OK, so he really is more of a teddy bear than a lion. I didn’t even get to share his story before someone snatched him up.

WAG made the decision in late November to start pulling dogs from rural shelters with high kill rates. These shelters hold the dog for three days and if not claimed are put on the kill list. If a rescue does not save them they are killed. I assume this is for cats too. These rural shelters are small and have no budget or community support. So, animals are being euthanized at extremely high rates. Leo was only in our custody for about 2weeks and he was adopted, but he was going to be killed. Two other dogs, Cinnamon, and Benji also were set to be killed but were able to be adopted very quickly under our care. These were 3 perfectly wonderful dogs that were set to be killed for no reason whatsoever.

Leo is a very sweet boy and we are so happy to have saved him and now he is living happily with a loving family!

Please if you live in a rural town, ask your city officials how strays are dealt with and if you love dogs and cats try to encourage a better approach.

We are currently looking for a very special Medical Foster for Scarlett. You can read more about that here.

Auntie Brandie Says, I Wuff You!

Auntie Brandie is one of our newest intakes at Williston Animal Group. She was pulled, along with her best buddy from a high kill shelter. She was set to be euthanized because her owner did not claim her.

She is described as a Walker Hound by some of our volunteers. She is a long lean walking machine. But, did you know the name has nothing to do with walking? Apparently, way back some time ago a dog with the really cool name of Tennesee Lead was crossed into the Walker Hound. Read more about it, it’s pretty cool history.

Her Petfinder page has not been updated yet, but she is very tall and if I had to guess a weight I would say 50 pounds. She is very lean and muscular and could put on some weight. She is very active and vocal. She is most likely not going to want to be an inside lap dog. She will need an active family and a fenced yard. She loves other dogs, so far she plays in playgroups with two other male dogs at the kennel. She is friendly and seems to like everyone. We do not know about small children or cats. She is going to bark, but since being at the kennel for about a week she is starting to calm down from all the excitement of being somewhere new. She is working on leash training with our volunteers and other basic manners. She is newly spayed.

If you would like to meet Brandie please call us at 352-528-9888 or you can email us at info@willistonanimalgroup.com You can also opt to sponsor Brandie through to adoption if you can’t adopt her.

Are Homemade Dog Treats Safe?

Hello, and welcome to Thursday! Only 9 more days until Christmas! Are you thinking of making your pup some homemade dog treats? Are they safe? Yes, depending on the ingredients you use. Some people even make a business out of it. Be careful though, there are some laws people should be aware of. This post only pertains to homemade dog treats. Other animals may have other food items they can not have.

What food items are safe, and or unsafe for dogs to eat?

Safe for dogs:

  1. Peanut butter. Be sure it does not contain Xylitol and all natural containing just peanuts is best.
  2. Flour and oats. Just grind up some oats in a blender to make quick oat flour.
  3. Pumpkin. Make sure it is pure pumpkin and has no other spices added to it, or sugar.
  4. Sweet Potato. Again, just be sure it doesn’t have added sugar or other spices.
  5. Yogurt. Only small amounts and probably not the kind with flavoring and added sugar.
  6. Bone broth.
  7. Tuna and salmon
  8. Banana
  9. Pork, chicken, beef
  10. Fresh peppermint

Not safe for dogs:

  1. Added sugars and some preservatives found in foods.
  2. Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, garlic and possibly others.
  3. Bread dough with yeast.
  4. Chocolate
  5. Alcohol
  6. Sugar substititues

There may be others so always do your research and or ask your vet. Below you will find a recipe for an easy, and healthy dog treats snack. If you wanted to put them into molds you can find a bunch here. That is not an affiliate link.
